botox for overactive bladder

Overactive bladder is a condition that affects people of all ages and can cause significant distress. Treatment options include medication, behavioral modification, physical therapy, neuromodulation and Botox injection into the bladder.

Botox injection into the bladder is a well-established treatment for overactive bladder and urgency incontinence. The first study to show that Botox could improve symptoms of overactive bladder was published in 2001; since then, hundreds of studies have been conducted looking at the safety and efficacy of this treatment. Today, Botox is considered an effective third-line treatment after oral medications and physical therapy have failed to give results.

How does it work?

Botox is found naturally in the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into muscles, Botox temporarily inhibits muscle contraction by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in voluntary muscle contraction.
